【南天雄鶏図】
「難を転ずる」として愛されてきた吉祥植物・南天と、若冲の魂である雄鶏を描いた一図です。冬の寒さの中でたわわに実る南天の赤、そして雄鶏の生命感溢れる赤。若冲はこの「赤」の対比を主軸に、画面を構成しました。重く降り積もる雪の表現には、あえて色を塗らずに絹地を活かす「外隈（そとぐま）」の技法を彷彿とさせる静謐さがあり、それが鶏の緻密な羽根の描写をより一層際立たせています。静寂の中に宿る強い生命力を感じさせる、品格ある名作です。
