終点、京師 「三條大橋」京都府京都市中京区 京師三條大橋は、その美しい橋の姿と共に、高い歴史的な価値もあります。東海道五十三次の旅の終着地点であるこの大橋。大名や旅人たちがここを通って京都の中心部に入っていきました。橋の周辺には商業地域や宿場町が作られ、賑わいを見せていました。 "Sanjo Ohashi" Kyoshi Sanjo Ohashi not only has a beautiful appearance, but also has high historical value. This bridge is the final stop on the 53 stages of the Tokaido journey. Daimyo and travelers passed through here to enter the center of Kyoto. 53大津 「走井茶店」滋賀県大津市 大津走井茶店は長い歴史を持ち、旅人や大名行列が立ち寄って休息や飲食を楽しんだ場所として知られています。地元の美味しいお茶や和菓子が提供され、特に大津で生産される煎茶は品質が高く評価されていました。 “Hashirii Tea House” Otsu Hashirii Tea Store has a long history and is known as a place where travelers and parades of feudal lords stopped by to enjoy rest, food and drinks. 52草津 「名物立場」滋賀県草津市 立場とは、宿場町で旅人や大名行列が休憩や交代を行う場所を指します。草津宿は宿場町として、また湯治場としても知られていました。草津名物の立場にて、大勢の旅人が休息や食事をする様子が描かれています。 “Special Teahouse” Tateba is a post town where travelers and feudal lord processions take a break and change places. Kusatsu-juku was known as a post town and a hot spring resort. It depicts a large number of travelers resting and eating in the position of a Kusatsu specialty.

51石部 「目川ノ里」滋賀県湖南市 目川ノ里の茶屋「いせや」が描かれています。菜飯や田楽豆腐が名物とされるこの茶屋は、江戸でも知られていました。石部宿は京から旅立った人々が最初に宿泊する宿場です。遠くには琵琶湖西岸の比良山が見えます。 “Mekawa no Sato” The teahouse "Iseya" in Mekawa no Sato is depicted. 50水口 「名物干瓢」滋賀県甲賀市 水口の名物である干瓢作りが描かれています。ウリ科の植物、瓢箪（ひょうたん）の実を乾燥させ、加工したものです。画中には特製の刃物で干瓢を捌いている様子も見えます。水口名物の干瓢は、その形状と風味が人気でした。 "Gourd" It depicts the making of dried gourds, a specialty of Minakuchi. It is made by drying and processing the fruit of the gourd, a plant belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. In the picture, you can also see him cutting the dried gourd with a special knife. 49土山 「春之雨」滋賀県甲賀市 険しい鈴鹿峠を越えた先にある土山宿、ここを通る大名行列が春の雨の中を静かに進んでいく様子が描かれています。田村川は雨で水量が増え、勢いよく流れています。土山は雨の多い場所で知られています。 "Spring rain" It depicts a procession of feudal lords passing through Tsuchiyama-juku, which is located beyond the steep Suzuka Pass, moving quietly through the spring rain. The Tamura River has increased in water volume due to rain and is flowing rapidly. Tsuchiyama is known as a place with a lot of rain.

48坂ノ下 「筆捨嶺」三重県亀山市 作品では、坂ノ下の宿場から眺める筆捨山が描かれています。筆捨山は岩や松、滝などの美しい景色で知られており、狩野元信がこの山を描こうとしたが、その美しさに圧倒されて筆を投げ捨てたという伝説があります。 “Throw away the brush” The work depicts Mt. 47関 「本陣早立」三重県亀山市 三重県鈴鹿の関所は、参勤交代の大名が宿泊する本陣が設けられました。大名の本陣には家紋が入った陣幕が張られ、家紋入りの提灯を持った家臣や足軽が警備にあたります。この絵の中に一つだけ別の家紋がありますが、それには安藤広重の頭文字が入っています。 “Honjin early morning” Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture At the checkpoint in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, a honjin was set up where the Daimyo of Sankin-Kotai would stay overnight. 45庄野 「白雨」三重県鈴鹿市 庄野は三重県鈴鹿市に位置する宿場です。 この作品では庄野の土地柄を見せることなく、激しい雨の中を行く旅人一行を劇的に描いています。強い雨の中景色が白み、なびく木々からも雨風の強さが伺えます。 "White rain" Shono is a post station located in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture. This work dramatically depicts a group of travelers traveling through heavy rain without showing the local characteristics of Shono. The scenery is white in the heavy rain, and the strength of the rain and wind can be seen from the waving trees.

44石薬師 「石薬師寺」三重県鈴鹿市 現在の三重県鈴鹿市にあたるのが石薬師の宿場。遠景の大きな山々の麓に描かれているのが石薬師寺です。手前では稲刈りが終わった田んぼが広がっています。医師薬師寺のご本尊には薬師如来が祀られています。 “Ishiyakushiji Temple” Ishiyakushi's post station is located in what is now Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture. Ishiyakushi-ji Temple is depicted at the foot of large mountains in the distance. In the foreground is a rice field that has just been harvested. Yakushi Nyorai is enshrined in the principal image of Physician Yakushiji Temple.

43四日市 「三重川」三重県四日市市 四日市は現在の三重県四日市市に位置する宿場です。三重川は現在の三滝川と考えられています。 三重川に掛かるか細い橋を、強風の中歩きを進める旅人。風に飛ばされた笠を追いかける人が描かれています。 "Mie River" Yokkaichi is a post station located in present-day Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture. Mie River is considered to be the current Mitaki River. A traveler walks through a strong wind on a narrow bridge spanning the Mie River. It depicts a person chasing a hat blown away by the wind.

42桑名 「七里渡口」三重県桑名市 宮から桑名へは海路が主で頻繁に船の往来がありました。距離が七里あったことから桑名宿の渡し場は七里渡口と呼ばれました。海に大きく突き出したお城は桑名城です。 "Seven village ferry" The main route from Miya to Kuwana was by sea, with frequent boat traffic. Because the distance was 28km, the ferry at Kuwana-juku was called Shichiri-Watashiguchi. The castle that juts out into the sea is Kuwana Castle.

41宮 「熱田神事」愛知県名古屋市熱田区 宮とは名古屋市内の熱田神宮を指しています。馬の塔と呼ばれる神事の様子が描かれています。藍染めの半纏の一群と、赤い有松絞の半纏の一群が、馬を走らせ競っています。熱田神宮は三種の神器草薙剣が祀られていることで有名です。 "Atsuta Shinto Ritual" Miya refers to Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya city. 38岡崎 「矢矧之橋」愛知県岡崎市 愛知県岡崎市に位置する宿場です。矢矧之橋は東海道内で最も長い橋とされています。橋の上に大名行列が並んでいて、橋の大きさと長さがよく分かります。岡崎は、徳川家康の出生地です。 "Yahagino Bridge" This is a post station located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. Yahagi Bridge is said to be the longest bridge on the Tokaido. The Daimyo procession is lined up on the bridge, and you can clearly see the size and length of the bridge. Okazaki is the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

37藤川 「棒鼻ノ図」 棒鼻とは棒端ともいい、宿場の境界に立てられていた道標です。御弊をたてた駒と一緒に御馬献進の一行と、座して頭を下げる地方役人や旅人たちの様子を描いています。それらを手前に、自然豊かな藤川の雄大な風景も大きく描かれています。 "Bohana" Bohana, is a signpost that was erected at the border of a post station. The painting depicts the horse-offering party along with the pieces that caused the mischief, as well as local officials and travelers sitting and bowing their heads. In the foreground, the magnificent scenery of Fujikawa, rich in nature, is also depicted.

36赤阪 「旅舎招婦ノ図」愛知県豊川市 愛知県豊川市の宿場です。旅舎招婦とは、宿場町の宿舎や茶屋で働く女性たちのことです。この作品では旅籠屋の室内の様子が描かれています。江戸時代の宿屋は食事の配膳や按摩など、旅人を中心に賑わいを見せていました。 “Picture of Inviting Women in a Inn” Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture This is a post station in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture. 35御油 「旅人留女」愛知県豊川市 御油の宿では留女（とめおんな）と呼ばれる女たちの客引きがさかんだったそうです。作品では旅人たちと強引に引き止める留女との諍いを滑稽に描いています。 “Travelers and Toutswoman” It is said that the Goyu was often visited by women called Tomeonna. The work humorously depicts the conflict between the travelers and the woman who forcibly stops them.

34吉田 「豊川橋」愛知県豊橋市 愛知県豊橋市の宿場。画面左には豊川に架かる「豊川橋」。右にある天守閣が吉田城。左官職人や鳶職が各々作業をしている情景が描かれています。さて、鳶職は仕事中なのでしょうか。 "Toyokawa Bridge" A post station in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture. 33二川 「猿ヶ馬場」愛知県豊橋市 「猿ヶ馬場」とは、二川（ふたがわ）宿付近にある地域や場所の名前です。猿ヶ馬場周辺は小松が多く生えている景勝の地で、かしわ餅を名物とする茶店があったそうです。中央手前、三人の女性は瞽女（ごぜ）と呼ばれる盲目の旅芸人です。 “Sarugababa” "Sarugaba" is the name of a region or place near Futagawa-juku. The area around Sarugababa is a scenic area where many Japanese pine trees grow, and it is said that there used to be a tea shop that was famous for its kashiwa mochi. The three women in the center foreground are blind traveling entertainers called goze.

32白須賀 「汐見阪図」静岡県湖西市 現在の静岡県湖西市にあたる場所。白須賀宿への道中、汐見坂から見る遠州灘の絶景が描かれています。 列をなす小さなたくさんの円は、坂道を行く大名行列の一行がかぶる笠。遠く海上に帆船の四角い白い帆が見えます。 “Shiomi slope map” A place that corresponds to present-day Kosai City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It depicts the spectacular view of the Enshu Sea from Shiomizaka on the way to Shirasuka-juku. The many small circles forming a row are the hats worn by the daimyo procession as it marches down the slope. The square white sails of a sailing ship can be seen in the distance.

31荒井 「渡舟ノ図」静岡県湖西市 愛知県岡崎市に位置する宿場です。 荒井渡という渡し場での舟の光景が描かれています。幔幕が張られた船は大名行列の一行を乗せた御座船です。舟が向かう先にあるのは関所。この関所は幕府直轄で、取り調べが特に厳しいことで知られていました。 “Ferryboat” This is a post station located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It depicts a boat at a ferry called Araiwatari. The boat with a curtain on it is a barge carrying a group of feudal lords. The place where the boat is heading is a checkpoint. This checkpoint was under the direct control of the Edobakufu and was known for its particularly strict interrogations.
