江戸時代中期に京都で活躍した天才絵師。超細密な描写と、奇抜とも言える独創的な構成、鮮やかな色彩は「奇想の絵師」として現代でも絶大な人気を誇ります。
【老松白鶏図】
若冲が最も愛し、自宅の庭でも飼っていたという「鶏」を主題とした代表作です。画面を縦断する老松のダイナミックな造形と、その下に佇む白鶏の静謐な姿。若冲は「白」という色の中に、気の遠くなるような細密な筆致で羽毛の重なりを描き込み、生命の輝きを表現しました。鶏の赤い鶏冠（とさか）が鮮烈なアクセントとなり、画面に緊張感と気品を与えています。長寿の象徴である松と、夜明けを告げる鶏を組み合わせた、吉祥の願いが込められた傑作です。

A genius painter of the mid-Edo period in Kyoto. Known as an artist of "eccentric imagination," Jakuchū is celebrated for his hyper-realistic detail, bold compositions, and vivid use of color.
[White Rooster under an Old Pine]
The rooster was Jakuchū’s most cherished subject, and this work is a definitive example of his mastery. A magnificent white rooster stands beneath the gnarled, sweeping branches of an ancient pine tree. Jakuchū uses an incredibly fine brush to layer various shades of white, creating a sense of volume and translucency in the feathers. The brilliant red of the rooster’s comb provides a sharp contrast, infusing the calm scene with a spark of vitality. Combining symbols of longevity (pine) and the herald of a new day (rooster), this tile radiates dignity and auspicious energy.
