【老松白鳳図】
「動植綵絵（どうしょくさいえ）」の中でも最高傑作の一つに数えられる作品です。力強く屈曲した老松の枝に、優雅に降り立つ純白の鳳凰。若冲は「裏彩色」という技法を駆使し、絹の裏側から色を当てることで、この鳳凰の羽に真珠のような深い輝きと透明感を与えました。ハート形を模したような尾羽の文様や、レースのように繊細な冠羽。一切の妥協を排した細密描写が、正方形のタイルの中で圧倒的な気品と静謐な美を放ちます。

A genius painter of the mid-Edo period in Kyoto. Known as an artist of "eccentric imagination," Jakuchū is celebrated for his hyper-realistic detail, bold compositions, and vivid use of color.
[White Phoenix and Old Pine]
Regarded as one of the crowning achievements of the "Doshoku Saie" series, this tile depicts a magnificent white phoenix perched upon the gnarled branch of an ancient pine tree. Jakuchū employed a specialized technique of painting on the reverse side of the silk to achieve the translucent, pearlescent glow of the bird's plumage. From the heart-shaped patterns on its tail to the delicate, lace-like crest, every detail is rendered with divine precision. This work represents a sublime harmony of strength and grace, radiating a sense of sacred purity.
