Japan is a country prone to earthquakes and other disasters. And the brewing culture has long flourished in Japan, with many of the country's breweries brewing or living in very old, culturally valuable buildings. Old buildings can be severely damaged in disasters such as earthquakes and heavy rainfall.
The purpose of establishing SAKEMARK is to support the recovery of sake breweries damaged by earthquakes and other disasters, and to promote Japanese domestic alcoholic beverages to the rest of the world.
The labels are taken from the sake breweries, badges are produced, sold on e-commerce sites and at events, and a 10% design fee is paid to the breweries from the sales. In addition, 10% of the total sales are used to support breweries and local authorities affected by the earthquake and other disasters.
In the past, support was provided for the Tohoku earthquake, the Hiroshima torrential rains, the Kyushu torrential rains and other fire damage caused by ageing facilities, but the situation changed drastically with the Corona disaster in 2019, and at once sales fell to almost zero and support ceased. Even in 2025, when the Corona disaster was over, sales had not even recovered by 10% due to the recession in Japan, but with the launch of the new Japanese painting coaster, the company decided to restart support for the brewery.
The sake label badges are called ‘Japanese Sake Support Badges’ and SAKEMARK is making a fresh start with the goal of restarting support for the breweries.
