武蔵国（神奈川県横浜市）の程ヶ谷宿付近。街道沿いに続く見事な松並木の隙間から、富士山が顔を覗かせる一瞬を捉えています。手前には、虚無僧（こむそう）や馬に乗った旅人、案内人が描かれ、当時の活気ある街道の様子を伝えています。松の幹が作る「縦のライン」によって、遠くの富士をあえて隠し、見せる。北斎の高度な空間演出と、旅の叙情が溶け合った名作です。

[Hodogaya on the Tokaido]
This tile depicts a scene near Hodogaya station in present-day Yokohama. Hokusai masterfully uses the vertical trunks of the pine trees lining the highway to frame the distant Mount Fuji. In the foreground, travelers—including a Zen priest (Komuso) and a man on horseback—add a sense of narrative and movement. The rhythmic composition of the trees and the mountain showcases Hokusai’s genius for integrating human life with the timeless beauty of the landscape.
