この作品は別名「赤富士」と呼ばれ、「神奈川沖波裏」「山下白雨」とともに富嶽三十六景の「三大役物」です。早朝に朝日を浴びた富士山が赤く染まる現象があることから、その様子を描いた作品だと考えられます。
